My eldest son tells me all of the time that I am totally behind the times. Some fashion trends come and go without me even noticing. My wardrobe is more "classic" than "edgy." But I will admit that some days it seems more frumpy than anything else.
Apparently, cake in a mug is another trend that passed me by. I think perhaps they have been around for quite some time...years even...without my having tried to make any. Luckily, the Secret Recipe Club stepped in to help rectify this gross omission in my menu repertoire. This month, I was assigned Megan's blog, Cooking Whims where I found the cakes. In mugs.
I made one while the kids were in school to see how it would turn out. My second son, the Thinker is always the first one home, so I let him be my guinea pig. Later that night, I made a few more and then let the Thinker make one for himself. He had a hard time reading my recipe. He couldn't see how a "T" and a "t" meant different measures. Then, after he'd grumbled through mixing the ingredients, he announced that his cake hadn't turned out. I looked into his mug and inquired when he was going to cook it. He got a sheepish look on his face and said, "I though the instructions said to stir it for one minute!" Teaching teens to cook can be a real process....
And one other thing. If you want to have a tidy looking mug, mix the ingredients in a separate bowl before cooking. As you can see from the above photo, things slosh.
Cake in a Mug (adapted from this recipe)
2 Tbsp self rising flour
2 Tbsp cocoa
2 Tbsp sugar
1/8 tsp salt
2 Tbsp milk
2 Tbsp vanilla yogurt
2 tsp oil
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Mix all ingredients in a mug. Microwave for 1 minute. Let sit until cool enough to eat. Top with whipped cream or ice cream.

I'm so glad you chose the cake in a mug recipe! I use it whenever I crave some cake, but can't/shouldn't make a whole one :)
haha - I love your son's baking experience! This looks great!
I LOVE this idea! So I must have been under a log, too, because I wasn't familiar with Cake-in-a-Mug until just now. Pure genius...
That looks yummy! I'll have to try it.
That makes me feel better because I still haven't made any either! And I hear you on the frumpy wardrobe thing!
Looks like a fun activity to do with kids...thanks for the tip to mix in another bowl first:-) I'm thinking one of these would be great to "try out" before the kids get home from school:-) Great SRC post!!!

I've always wanted to try the cake-in-a-mug thing but I'm kind of worried that once I find out how easy it is, I'll never stop making them!
One of our readers sent me a private message a few weeks back saying that her mother had found 'cake in a mug" kits at Sam's Club that they tried. She said the chocolate flavors were the best but homemade is probably healthier and tastier I imagine.
I only made cake in a mug for the first time about 10 days ago...so I am obviously behind as well. This looks delicious, particularly with the dose of whipped cream on top!
I to must be behind the times, because I have yet to make cake in a mug. I've seen it on several blogs and thought about making one though! :) Yours looks delicious.
I'm really excited to try it, baking in a mug sounds like a pretty good idea

I am behind the times too, but I still want to try this cake in a mug!! Yum!
Lol, I am behind on the times too because I tried my first mug creation the other day (shh don't tell anyone, but its my post for tomorrow!). This chocolaty cake sounds sinful and I love that it uses yogurt.
